CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

AT THE SOUND OF HER CELL PHONE RINGING, EVE STIRRED GROGGILY awake. She had only been sleeping fitfully, coming awake off and on. Too much on her mind, too much she didn’t understand. Groping toward the bedside table for her phone, she glanced at the red numbers on the clock. Two a.m. Frowning, suddenly worried, she pressed the phone against her ear.

“Eve, it’s Ran. We have a problem. We could use your help.”

Her head began to clear. “Ran? What’s going on?”

“We’re on our way back to the hotel. I’ll tell you all about it when we get there.”

“The hotel? Where have you been?” Maybe she didn’t want to know, she suddenly thought. Perhaps—

“Something happened at the asylum. We’re bringing someone with us. A young woman. She needs a place to spend the night. We’re hoping you’ll be willing—”

“Of course. Whatever you need.”

“We’ll be there in just a few minutes. I’ll explain when I get there.” The line went dead, but Eve’s mind was racing.

Something had happened at the orphanage. A young woman was involved. They were bringing her back to the hotel. They, Ran had said. Ran and who else?

Eve didn’t have to wait long. Dressing hurriedly in soft brown yoga pants and an oversize sweater, she pulled a brush through her dark hair and streaked on some lipstick. A light knock sounded just as she finished.

Eve hurried across the living room and pulled open the door.

Shock rolled through her at the sight of Jesse standing in the hallway, a slender blond girl draped over his arms, her head lolling against his shoulder.

Ran moved first, holding the door as Jesse brushed past Eve and carried the girl into the suite, over to the sofa. As he settled her on the cushions, Eve ran into her bedroom and grabbed a pillow. Long, gleaming blond hair spread out as Eve placed the pillow under the girl’s head.

Her eyelids fluttered open. In the lamplight, Eve could see two huge, dilated black orbs in a pair of bright blue eyes. The eyelids fluttered closed again.

“What’s going on?” Eve asked, irritation beginning to surface as she did her best to understand what could possibly be happening.

“It’s a long story,” Ran said.

“Apparently we’ll be spending the rest of the night together, so you’ll have plenty of time to tell me.”

Ran turned to Zane. “Why don’t you give Eve a rundown.”

Zane squared his shoulders. “Yes, sir.”

“And by the way, after tonight, I think it’s time you started calling me Ran, just like everyone else.”

“Yes, sir.”

Eve caught the hint of amusement in Ran’s expression.

“Why don’t we all sit down at the table,” Eve suggested, and they headed in that direction. Zane started at the beginning, telling Eve how he had decided to go back to the asylum and stake out the room off the kitchen, hoping to discover any threat they might be facing. He described events after he arrived, the arrival of the four men and the girl, his text to Jesse, who had shown up with Ran.
